The 25-year-old South African-Irish medical scientist works also as model. Before competing in beauty pageants, she was working as a bartender. Originally hailing from South Africa, she and her family moved from South Africa to Ireland in 2004. Uba grew up in direct provision after moving to Ireland with her family from South Africa when she was just eight years old. She came to Ireland as an asylum seeker from Johannesburg, in South Africa, when she was seven. “I remember thinking it was strange that I couldn’t hear gunshot when I arrived,” she says. The eldest of six siblings, she grew up in the direct-provision system and is now a “very proud” Irish citizen. “I cried when I got my Irish passport.”Today, she is a very proud Irish citizen.
She hopes to use her Miss Ireland title to represent a more diverse Island on the world stage and believes education is a superpower.
In 2017, she earned her bachelor’s degree in medical science. While reigning as Miss Galway 2020, she was working at the biochemistry department of the University Hospital Galway and completing her master’s degree in clinical chemistry in Trinity College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland.
“It means so much to me,” a delighted Uba says to Irish Times. “I am so grateful I can show girls that colour is not something that holds you back and it doesn’t matter where you come from, the world is your oyster.” “My mum, she was in absolute tears,” she says of the family reaction to her win.
