Miss Universe Organization has announced that the grand coronation for Miss Universe 2020 will be held on 16th May 2021 in Hollywood, Florida. Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa will crown her successor by the end of the event finale.
One of the qualities that is required to be a true beauty queen is standing up or raising a voice fearlessly for what you feel is right. Miss Universe queens use the platform given to them to raise a voice or work for an advocacy they truly believe in but at the same time they use their powerful and impactful voice to stand against social injustice that harms the environment of the entire society.
A few of the representatives in Miss Universe 2020 have similar powerful and impactful voice which they have raised against the social injustice they have seen around and have been fearlessly working towards making a change in the society they live in. Let’s look at some of the divas of Miss Universe 2020 who are standing up against the social injustices happening in their respective countries:
Miss Universe Myanmar 2020 Thuzar Wint Lwin
Thuzar Wint Lwin is using her voice to stand up against and raise awareness about the current situation in Myanmar. She has been an active member of the ongoing protests despite being aware of the uncertainty of the situation when it comes to the normal citizen of the country. Her fearless attitude and confidence to eradicate the dictatorship or suppression of the Myanmar Military. In early February, the Myanmar military launched a coup d’état to seize power on the grounds of “ruling party election fraud.” Many important political figures including Aung San Suu Kyi were imprisoned. The military’s intention to re-elect the parliament caused many dissatisfactions among the Burmese people, who took to the streets to demonstrate, demanding that the military respect the results of the election and return to power peacefully.
Miss Universe Canada 2020 Nova Stevens
Nova Stevens who is an activist has been working and advocating about how much Black Lives Matter even before the movement started. She has showcased what saving black lives means to her as she has been vocal about the same since a very long time. She has always used her voice because she believes that she has an opportunity to make a change and she wants to grab onto it as soon as she can. She wants to use this opportunity to bring attention to the injustice faced by racialized people. The diva wants to create awareness and educate more people because at the end of the day she feels that it is all about educating people. After winning the title of Miss Universe Canada 2020, she took to her social media to share, “You’ve heard the news, you’ve read the stories. Innocent black lives have been lost to police brutality and hate crimes. We want you to see us. We want you to hear us. We want you to feel us. I ask that you diversify your surroundings, because when you do that, it creates a better understanding. Know that hate is taught; therefore, we can unlearn it. So, let’s do that! Let’s get back to our truest essence, which is love.”
Miss Universe Thailand 2020 Amanda Obdam
Amanda Obdam is using her voice to not only raise awareness about the Mental Health conditions in the country but also to express her disapproval of all forms of violence against people. She was recently removed as the Mental Health Ambassador by the Depart of Mental Health in Thailand because of her political tweets which were against the government but in favor of the public. Amanda later held a press conference where she addressed the issue and mentioned that she would continue to listen to people and raise her voice for the injustice in the country with all her heart and mind. She looked in good sprits and confident about her voice and the pageant fanatics appreciated and applauded her for her bravery and fearless attitude.
Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo
Rabiya Mateo grabbed the attention after she claimed that women are as capable as men to run a country. This statement was in reference to President Rodrigo Duterte’s statement that women are unfit for the presidency. She stood firm at her stand and believes that women can do anything they believe and we all need to look at the background of the leaders and we really need to use our mind and our heart in doing so because this is going to give the opportunities to our children to build a better society for the future. She received a lot of backlash for her comment but she stands firm with what she said.
Miss Universe Australia 2020 Maria Thattil
Maria Thattil is someone who has been raising her voice for the social injustices since the day she was crowned and she has received nothing but love and support from the people. She has been a victim of cyber bullying and discrimination but wished that her winning the crown would help her to change and promote diversity, change people’s opinions, and inspire people from all different backgrounds and she has made a constant effort to do that. She has conducted live session, shared stories on her social media and been very vocal about how she has dealt with all the injustice she had to face and how that has made her stronger and fearless.
Miss Universe Mexico 2020 Andrea Meza
Andrea Meza is an advocate for ‘Stop Street Harassment’ and went through the same thing vert recently. The experience didn’t let her spirits die or go in vain but made her stronger and adamant that she must be more outspoken and vocal about the harassment that happens on the streets and make constant effort to stop it so that no on can be the victim of it just like she was.
